Hey Beat fans, and all you fans of the ABC hit TV show “Revenge”, it’s time for another edition of Gig Spotlight, focusing on the venerable Hamptons’ club The Stephen Talkhouse, where The English Beat is performing this Friday, July 20th!
The Stephen Talkhouse, located at 161 Main Street in Amagansett, NY, is one The Hamptons’ best clubs for live music. For those spending time during the summer either for a long weekend, a vacation or for the summer itself, the club is a great place to hear various types of live musical performances.
Oh yeah, it’s definitely “the” place to catch a great show in the Hamptons — so don’t be surprised to see Emily Thorne there with Nolan Ross plotting their latest revenge scheme on those pesky Graysons! It would be equally unsurprising to see Billy Joel encouraged onto the stage to jam with Paul Simon, or maybe a member of the Who in town, just chilling out. Yeah, it is that kind of an amazing rock Xanadu.
Perhaps it helps that the club is open more than most in its area. Prime season for most clubs in The Hamptons is from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, however, The Talkhouse has performances during the off season, so for those who want to enjoy a more quiet time in The Hamptons or for local residents and visiting rock gods, there is still an opportunity to enjoy a live show.
The club’s history is quiet interesting, as is it’s name, which is an homage to a Native American historical figure, one Stephen Talkhouse. Stephen Taukus “Talkhouse” Pharaoh (ca. 1879–1921) was a Montaukett Native American of the late 19th century who was famed for his 25-50 mile daily round trip walks from Montauk, New York to East Hampton and Sag Harbor. It’s a very apt name for the club, because viewing the list of artists who’ve played The Talkhouse is like taking a walk down our own musical legacy. The list of luminaries who’ve graced the stage include the likes of The Coasters, Bo Diddley, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Who, Paul Simon, Sir Paul McCartney, The Byrds, Van Morrison, The Animals, The Alman Brothers Band, Jefferson Airplane, Velvet Underground, Billy Joel, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Jimmy Cliff, The Supremes, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, our own English Beat, and many more amazing acts!
More of the club’s fascinating history can be read on their website here.
The Stephen Talkhouse is a great place to go with a group of friends or as a couple to enjoy great live music!! So come on out and enjoy this historic club and move ya’ likkel feet and come a dance to da Beat!!
